Tomey Specular Microscope EM-4000 Endothelium Specular Microscope
What is it?
The EM-4000 is a new and innovative specular microscope, manufactured by Tomey, specialists in ophthalmic diagnostic instruments. A specular microscope is an optical reflection microscope that is designed for the acquisition of pictures of the corneal endothelium under very high magnification. The corneal endothelium is the single layer of cells that line the clear, protective outer layer of your eye. Through a completely automatic system, Tomey EM-4000 observes and analyzes the corneal endothelium without direct contact with the eye.
How does it work?
A specular microscope focuses a slit of light on the corneal endothelial surface. The reflected light rays are then focused onto a video monitor screen for examination by your eye doctor. The Tomey EM-4000 uses automatic image focusing technology to capture pictures of the corneal endothelium.
What are its uses?
The Tomey EM-4000 can photograph the corneal endothelium with a wide capturing area. It can calculate the cell density as well as the central corneal thickness. The assessment of endothelial health is important in diagnosing various endothelial diseases and for evaluating donor cornea prior to corneal transplantation or keratoplasty. It is also used in the postoperative follow-up after the procedure.
Tomey EM-400 specular microscopy is used in:
- Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy
- Posterior polymorphous endothelial dystrophy
- Congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy
- Iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome
- Macular corneal dystrophy
- Inflammation (Uveitis)
- Contact lenses that cause endothelial cell changes
- Endothelial changes after surgical procedures like cataracts and due to systemic diseases like diabetes and chronic kidney diseases requiring hemodialysis
What to expect while undergoing the test with the machine?
You will be asked to be seated and fix your eyes on the fixation lamp ahead.
What are the advantages?
The wide range of positions captured can increase the chances of photographing an eye with partial opacity of the cornea. The continuous automatic capturing process can capture 16 images at a time, reducing errors. It can select and display the best images, as well as increase the transfer speed, thereby improving your comfort.
The Tomey EM-4000 can analyze the number of cells, the cell density, and the average cell area. It can also measure the standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV) of the cell area, along with the maximum and minimum cell area. The health of the endothelial cells is interpreted based on these parameters, which are good indicators of corneal endothelial dysfunction and progression of endothelial wound healing.
